Equipment (WHEELS/BEARINGS) question

OK ... I KNOW I need new wheels, but I have NO idea what to look for -- hardness, brand, etc ...

I ended up w/ 2 sets of new wheels from rollercon ... one is a Carrera "sure grip" 62mm 96A (Red Jenn from LA Derby Dolls gave me these). The other -- all I know about them is that they are a "RADAR" wheel ... I won them in the raffle when I wasn't there, so I've emailed Ivanna & am waiting a response. From what I've tried to find online, most Radar's are 95A hardness.

So -- what hardness do I want ... for a BLOCKER type position (not pure SPEED, as I'm not a jammer & don't plan on joining any Speed Team).

Any thoughts on the 2 different wheels/brands/etc?

I also have a set of "China Reds" bearings & a set of .. ??? that I got from rollercon. (I'll let you know when I find them - but Jenn said that they weren't "fancy").

What do I care about bearings, ABEC's, brands, etc.

It is my opinion that I don't need the best of the best shit for my skates ... I reserve that $$ sink for my pads & protection.

Quick summary ... what hardness wheels are recommended (indoor plastic coated concrete rink)? Recommended brands? (I WILL NOT USE PINK or PURPLE wheels!! Ideally, black, red, orange, flames, etc ... but I'm not horribly picky except that I don't want pink or purple! Ideally, not blue either, but I can live with that! lol) For bearings, any clues on what ABEC translates to on the rink & what is recommended? Any recommendations on brand there? I know that they have different materials as well (porceline, etc) ... I've heard that porceline is best, but not worth the $$ for derby. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Generally, the inline indoor speed skaters use much harder wheels than the outdoor inliners such as myself. Given that you're going more for control & stopping power (even though we're talking about quads here), I'd definitely recommend the softer (95A) wheels you mentioned above.

As for bearings, the higher the # in the ABEC rating, the higher the precision in the manufacturing process, which translates to less friction which translates to higher speed. You've got to figure out what's best for you, but you might start with an ABEC 5. I've known skaters who deliberately use the lower ratings, to lower their speeds while they work on various moves.

For more detailed info on bearings, check out these links:

Some of the info in those links refers to inline skates, but we use the same types of bearings as quad skaters do.

oookay! Firstly what type of Radar wheels did you get?
I suspect that you either got the Stingray (in the colorful pastels)
Or the Radar clearish X-rays.
Anywho! China Bones are VERY good, so keep those. As for wheels, it sounds like you need a semi grippy wheel.
since you don't like purple or pink I'll keep that in mind..
Ditch the Carrera brand wheels, they're gonna wear out quick and they're shit wheels.

Claws are ok

I highly reccomend the Labeda Snapper

Radar X-Rays are good too

When you get into the higher end wheels, the colour indicates hardness. So the reds are grippy Fugitives

I ALWAYS reccomend these :) Hyper Witch Doctors

Hyper Dualies (I'm getting this in conjunction with some China Bones [Reds] for my Carreras, so I'll let ya know how they are.)

Radar's Speed Ray (I have these in green) I highly reccomend these, EXTREMELY smooth, very nice even roll, I paid ALOT for em, but they're really really nice.

that's the rest of this lady's stock. Hope I could help at all

I have no idea yet what type of Radars ... I'm just going from a post from Ivanna on the roller derby yahoo board that someone told me about. I've emailed her, but haven't gotten a response yet. Its a 3 day weekend! I can afford to be patient! *grin*

& don't get me wrong ... if the ones I won ARE pink or purple, I'll either deal with it or offer them to Red Jenn (since she gave me the other ones)! The Carrera ones might suck, but they will be FAR better than the BALD ones I'm skating on now! lol

i got radar stingrays with my skates and they wore out within a month! i dont think youd have to worry about those anyways cos they do not fit your color criteria. haha (i actually prefer pink wheels...) but the radar xrays are good wheels.

the carreras are pretty crappy i think. a lot of girls who have those wore them out right away.

i had ABEC-5 before and i did not like them as much as the reds. reds are really good bearings.

the end.
